Legend says the tower lifted from the upper town and flew down to the river so it could never be taken — beneath it Rigas Feraios was strangled.

Legend has it that the original Nebojša tower, 'the fearless', lifted itself out of Belgrade's upper town when the Turks took the fortress, and flew down to the riverbank so that it could never be conquered. The name passed to the cannon tower that stands at the mouth of the Sava today — and under Ottoman rule that tower became a notorious dungeon and torture chamber. By its walls people still speak of moans that seem to rise from the old cells at dusk.

It was here that the Greek revolutionary poet Rigas Feraios was strangled in 1798, his body thrown into the Danube, and here that Metropolitan Metodije was executed in 1800. The tower is the best-preserved medieval building of the Belgrade fortress — and its most feared.
