In the watermill at Zarožje the vampire Sava Savanović drank the millers' blood – villagers still avoid the place after dark.

Serbia's most infamous vampire is said to have dwelt in the old watermill on the Rogačica stream in the village of Zarožje. Whoever stayed the night to grind their grain was found dead, drained of blood. In the legend, young Strahinja finally dared to trick the vampire by laying a log in his bed, and when Sava attacked he roared his famous lament: ninety years he had been a vampire, and never left without supper like tonight. The villagers traced his grave and pierced the corpse with a hawthorn stake, but a butterfly slipped out of the coffin – said to carry his evil spirit onward. When the dilapidated mill collapsed in 2012, the municipality issued a half-serious vampire warning to its residents.
