The Thieves in the Earth-Dugout at Horngärdet, Västra Stenby
Östergötland · Schweden · Sägenplats · Grusel 3/5
A pair of convicted pickpockets dug themselves three ells into the earth to escape exile — and hid stolen silver beneath the hearth.
In Västra Stenby an old story was told of an old man and his parents. His father and mother were pickpockets sentenced to exile, but by law they could remain in the land if they buried themselves three ells underground, which they did in an earth-dugout at Horngärdet. When a quantity of silver was stolen in Vadstena, the old man was suspected, and a constable listening at the chimney hole heard the old woman reveal that they had buried the silver beneath the hearth, where it was indeed found. Their son, a rough fisherman and brush-maker, is said to have often declared that he could not die without being beaten to death or fetched by the Evil One.
