The Great Brook at Lövberg

Lappland · Schweden · Natural site

Several had heard cries and wailing by the brook. Olle Nilsson met the man who blocked his path whichever way he turned – and learned who lay buried there.

Olle Nilsson from Åsele lived for a time at Lövberg in northern Vilhelmina. Once he walked home from Klimpfjäll along the road between them. At a great brook on the way, several people had heard cries and wailing, though he had never heard anything there. Now he met a man and greeted him, without knowing whether the other answered. Olle stepped to the left – the man stepped there too, into his path. He stepped right – the man went there. Back and forth it went, until on the fourth attempt Olle asked outright: "Who are you?" The man answered that he was a travelling merchant from Västergötland, that he had come from Norway and had met his death right here. He had carried one thousand five hundred and forty crowns, and the man who offered to guide him over the treacherous ice had brought an axe along – and killed him with it. He pointed out where he lay buried and asked Olle to carry his bones to consecrated ground. Olle searched, found the bones, and gave them to the priest.
