Messlingen

Härjedalen · Schweden · Natural site

Nine sledges drawn by nine small horses carried a coffin across the frozen lake – and on the pasture west of the village, hymn-singing rose out of the ground itself.

A man in the mountain village of Messlingen is said to have watched an entire funeral procession move across the frozen lake: nine sledges drawn by nine small horses with fine bells, the coffin on the foremost and heaped with wreaths, the other loads filled with black-clad earth folk in red pointed caps. West of the village lies a summer pasture where singing has been heard at night for generations. One narrator told how almost every summer they lived there they heard the singing, sometimes stronger, sometimes fainter, and that it seemed to come out of the ground outside the cabin – so divinely beautiful, almost like fine hymn tunes, yet without any words that could be made out. Another man in the village said his mother had heard hymn-singing there more beautiful than any she had known. On a nearby pasture in the early 1800s, children out picking berries suddenly found themselves inside a fine house where a woman was churning butter and asked them to stay.
