Bojnice Castle
Trenčiansky kraj · Slovakien · Castle
In fairy-tale Bojnice Castle the White Lady walks the corridors when the wind howls – and the stern Black Lady keeps watch on the tower.
Bojnice in western Slovakia, all spires and turrets like a Loire chateau, is the country's most visited castle – but it has its own nocturnal residents. Tradition has a White Lady walking the corridors whenever strong winds batter the walls, while a Black Lady, a stern figure who watched over the castle in life, appears atop the tower. The castle is also tied to its last count, Ján František Pálffy, who rebuilt it as his dream residence but died before completion – his restless spirit said to linger still. Every year the castle's famous International Festival of Ghosts and Spirits reinforces the bond between Bojnice and the supernatural.
