In the ruined city of Ayutthaya, the spirit Pu Som Fao Sap keeps watch over the cursed treasures of the royal crypts.

The old capital of Ayutthaya was burned by Burmese armies in 1767, leaving a landscape of temple ruins that Thai folk belief holds to be thick with spirits. Best known is the legend of Pu Som Fao Sap, 'Grandfather Som who guards the treasure': when looters broke into the crypt beneath Wat Ratchaburana in 1957 and stole its gold, the curse is said to have hounded them to ruin — several were arrested, and others reportedly went mad. Guards and visitors also tell of headless figures moving among the stupas at dusk. The ruined city is today a World Heritage Site, best explored in daylight.
