The Khao Lak coastline in Phang Nga was the hardest hit in Thailand when the tsunami of 26 December 2004 killed thousands of residents and tourists. In the months that followed, a wave of ghost stories swept the Andaman coast: drivers picked up foreign passengers who dissolved mid-journey, hotel staff heard laughter and cries from empty beaches, and wet footprints were said to lead down to the sea. In Thai folk belief, those who die suddenly and violently become phi tai hong, restless spirits, and monks held large ceremonies along the coast to help the dead move on. Khao Lak is a rebuilt resort town today, but the stories rank among the most talked-about hauntings of modern times.
