Harput, the old citadel town on the crag above Elazig, has been inhabited since Urartian times and holds castle ruins, mosques and abandoned quarters. For generations people here have told of Kamos, a malevolent being that settles on sleepers' chests at night so they can neither move nor cry out — said to loom gigantic one moment and shrink tiny the next, it has been blamed for nightmares and sudden deaths alike. The tale is among Anatolia's best-known legends of night terror. Among the castle ruins at dusk, it is easy to believe.
