In Yedikule's prison towers the young sultan Osman II was strangled — and from the bloody well the laments of the executed are said to rise.

The Fortress of the Seven Towers by Constantinople's old land walls, built around the Byzantine Golden Gate and enlarged by Mehmed the Conqueror in 1458, served for centuries as the Ottoman state prison. Here the eighteen-year-old sultan Osman II was strangled in 1622, and tradition holds that the heads of executed prisoners were thrown into the so-called bloody well in the courtyard. Visitors report moans and cold draughts in the towers, and an old tale claims a prisoner laid a curse on the place before vanishing without trace. The fortress is a museum today — but its tower rooms keep their dark reputation.
