Around the Swallow Cave and the burial field beside it, ghost stories have flourished for generations, and both guards and visitors have told of voices and figures in the dark. Tradition holds the seaside cave was an execution ground as far back as the Japanese period and was later used as a makeshift morgue. Prisoners who died with no one to claim the body were buried in the field alongside — called by their fellow inmates the 'thirteenth squadron', since the prison had twelve.

Oasis Villa was built in 1972 on Green Island off Taiwan's east coast, where the political prisoners of the White Terror were taken: writers, students and dissidents, held behind high walls for decades. The whole site is now a memorial museum to the victims.
