Xinglin Hospital
Tainan · Taiwan · Hospital
Neighbours with binoculars saw a long-haired woman walking the closed hospital's floors – and some claim to have received phone calls from a line dead for decades.
Xinglin Hospital in central Tainan was once one of the city's largest private hospitals, until it was shut down in 1993 after a scandal of falsified records and insurance fraud. The building was left with its equipment, patient files and basement morgue intact, and over three decades it grew into Taiwan's most talked-about abandoned hospital. Neighbours training binoculars on the windows claimed to see a long-haired woman drifting through the wards, others met an old man in white – and some insisted they had received phone calls from the hospital's long-dead number. In 2021 a man was found dead in the lift shaft, which only fed the rumours. The building was bought by a bank in 2018 and is slowly being converted.
