Olesko Castle

At Olesko Castle the monk Kostia walks again – and two unhappy lovers are said to still search for each other through the halls.
Fourteenth-century Olesko is one of western Ukraine's oldest castles and the birthplace of the Polish king Jan III Sobieski. Its most famous revenant is the monk Kostia: by folk tradition a monk of ill repute who was walled up alive in the castle wall, and whose skeleton is said to have been found during restoration work. Guards and staff have told of footsteps on empty floors, tables shaking and a stooped figure moving between the monastery and the castle. Martsiana, daughter of castle lord Ivan Danylovych, and her beloved Adam are also said to wander here – two souls destroyed by an unhappy love, never finding each other again.
