West Jessamine

Kentucky · USA · Cemetery

An old family cemetery inside a stone wall stands on the school grounds. The football field was a mass grave during the cholera epidemic.

On the grounds of this school at Nicholasville, Kentucky there is an old family burial ground, enclosed by a stone wall.

The football field was used as a mass grave during a cholera epidemic.

That part is entirely plausible. Cholera swept Kentucky repeatedly in the nineteenth century, and in the worst outbreaks whole communities buried their dead quickly and together, without ceremony, because there was no time and no one well enough to dig properly.

The further claim, that three women were hanged for witchcraft from a tree in the old cemetery, is not plausible. Kentucky was not settled by Europeans until the 1770s, decades after witchcraft ceased to be a capital charge anywhere in the colonies, and no such case exists.

Teachers and pupils report things in and around the walled plot.

The school is in use. The burial ground is on school property.
