The Pali Lookout

Kamehameha drove the defending army off this cliff in 1795 to take Oahu. Visitors describe figures going over the edge to the right of the lookout.

The Nuʻuanu Pali on Oahu is one of the most visited viewpoints in Hawaii, and one of the most significant battlefields in the islands.

In 1795 Kamehameha's forces pushed the defending army of Oahu up this valley and over the cliff. Hundreds of warriors went off the edge. When a road was cut through the pass a century later, workers found hundreds of skulls at the base.

What visitors report at night includes a white figure among the trees, and the silhouettes of warriors being thrown from the cliff to the right of the lookout as you stand facing Kaneohe.

This is a place where a great many people died in a single day, and where their descendants live below. Hawaiian custom about how to behave at such sites is not superstition and is worth following.

The lookout is public and the wind up there is genuinely dangerous.
