The James Brown House of 1770, one of Manhattan's oldest surviving homes, once stood mere yards from the Hudson River shoreline – and the tavern on its ground floor has watered sailors for over two centuries. Its most famous guest never checked out: a sailor known as Mickey, said to have lodged here in the early 1900s and died when a car struck him outside the door. The staff of The Ear Inn blame him for most oddities – beer glasses drained the moment a patron looks away, candles flaring to life on their own, phones mysteriously discharged, and sly pinches at the waitresses' waists. Regulars greet him as one of the crew. The upper floor, where seamen once rented rooms, is where footsteps are said to pace at night.
