The Georgian Van Cortlandt House of 1748 is the oldest building in the Bronx, and the war ran straight through it: Washington used it as a headquarters, and in the park's woods a Stockbridge Indian company was wiped out in a 1778 ambush – the fallen lie buried in the park's northwest corner. The house's most cherished legend concerns Captain Rau, a Hessian mercenary shot on patrol in these woods and carried dying to an upstairs bedroom, where he faded with his fiancée at the bedside. On the anniversary of his death, footsteps and dragging sounds are said to come from the room. Museum staff also tell of nursery dolls found rearranged inside locked cases, whispering in a language no one can place, and a servant girl still searching for her master's hidden silver.
