A gravel road east of Brookfield, Missouri. Most children in the town grew up knowing the stories, and the first one is about a boy on a tricycle.
Old Colemine Road, known locally as Jarboe Road, is a gravel road running out into the country on the east side of Brookfield, Missouri. Most children in the town were told the stories about it.
The first concerns a small boy who lived in a farmhouse along the road. He was riding his tricycle on it and was hit and killed by a passing lorry.
When the moon is full, according to the tradition, he can be seen on the tricycle for a few seconds before fading.
There are further stories attached to the same road.
No record has been produced for the child's death, and it is set down as local tradition. Roads like this one, gravel, unlit, with farmhouses set back from them, generate this particular story across the whole of the rural Midwest, and the tricycle is the detail that makes it stick.
