Old St Louis Road
Missouri · USA · Church
The road people took from Farmington up to St Louis in the 1800s. The instruction is to drive in slowly, stop, switch everything off and sit in the dark.
Off Highway 67 and Old Charter Church Road near De Soto, Missouri runs a track called Old St Louis Road. In the 1800s it was the route people took from Farmington up to St Louis, and a great many of them travelled it over the century and a half it was in use.
The claim attached is that thousands died along it between 1800 and 1954, which is the sort of round figure that appears when nobody has counted anything. Roads of this kind did claim lives, but no record supports a number like that.
The method is what people come for. Follow Old Charter Church Road until you reach a gravel track leading into the woods. Drive in at fifteen or twenty miles an hour. Keep going for two or three minutes, then stop. Turn everything off and sit in the dark.
That instruction is doing the same work as every other version of it in this archive: it puts a car full of people in complete darkness on an abandoned road in the woods and asks them to wait.
