The building sits above what Portland calls the Shanghai tunnels, a network of passages under the old town that connected basements to the waterfront. What they were actually used for is argued about: the dramatic version has men drugged in bars and carried through them to be sold onto ships, and historians who have looked hard find delivery routes and storage rather than kidnapping.

Either way there are passages under this floor, and the staff know exactly where the opening is.
