Oriskany

New York · USA · Haunted site

General Herkimer's advance party was destroyed in these woods in 1777. A former employee describes the smell that came out of them.

On 6 August 1777 a militia column under General Nicholas Herkimer was ambushed in this ravine in the Mohawk Valley by Loyalist troops and their Haudenosaunee allies. It was one of the bloodiest engagements of the entire Revolution, fought hand to hand for hours in a thunderstorm.

What made Oriskany different was who was fighting. The Haudenosaunee Confederacy split over that war, and Seneca and Mohawk fought Oneida on this ground. A league that had held for centuries broke here.

A former employee reports an appalling stench coming out of the woods where Herkimer's advance party was destroyed.

In the visitor centre, the door to the men's room slams itself shut, and dark shadows are cast on the wall with nobody standing to cast them.

The battlefield is a state historic site and is open.
