There was no emergency number to dial in those days. One man stayed in the building. He went to a telephone inside the inn and rang every room in turn to make sure everybody got out.
He had a heart attack while he was still making the calls, and he died there.
That is one of the very few accounts in this archive about somebody who chose to stay, and it is the reason this entry exists. Everyone else in the building got out because a guest decided to work the phones instead of leaving.
He is reported in the rebuilt inn, and the reports mostly concern the telephones.
Paso Robles grew up around hot springs and the inn was the reason people came. The present building dates from after the fire.
The inn is open and takes guests.
