The Pendleton Underground
Oregon · USA · Haunted site
Businesses operated below the streets of the old red light district, linked by tunnels running under the whole town. Some are still there and the city.
Beneath the old red light district in Pendleton, Oregon there is an underground level where a great many businesses operated in the early 1900s, connected by tunnels that ran under the entire town.
Most of the tunnels have been filled in for safety. Some remain, and the city runs tours through parts of them.
What went on down there is documented rather than legendary. There were card rooms, opium dens, a butcher, a bathhouse and laundries, much of it run by Chinese labourers who were not permitted to trade or live above ground on equal terms, and there were brothels operating over the top of it.
Pendleton was a wool and wheat town with thirty two saloons and eighteen brothels at its peak.
The tunnels are open to visitors on guided tours.
