This hospital at Hanson, Massachusetts was built for tuberculosis patients, and a great many people died in it.

It stood deserted for years. People walking past described the sense of being watched, and what was heard from the building ranged from screaming to laughter.

A warning was filed in February 2004 and it applies to every abandoned institution in this collection. Buildings of this kind are structurally unsafe, they contain asbestos and lead, the floors give way, and trespass in them is both illegal and genuinely dangerous.

The patients here were held under public health law rather than by choice, sometimes for years. Children were among them. The treatment on offer amounted to rest, sunlight and waiting to see.

That is what the wards were for and it is what the reports are attached to.

The hospital has since been demolished and the site redeveloped.
