Historic Richmond Town lies off Amboy Road on Staten Island, New York, a preserved village of houses ranging from around a hundred to three hundred years old, open to visitors.
Local tradition holds that all of the houses are occupied by more than the interpreters who work in them, which is a broad claim, but one house is singled out consistently.
It stands on one of the side streets, painted white, with a green cellar door on the side of the building. The account is oddly confident about what happens: look up at the left hand window after dark and you will see the figure of a small boy.
Two boys are said to have died on the upper floor of that house.
Restored villages are strange places at night. The buildings are furnished and maintained as though somebody still lives in them, the lights are off, and there is nobody inside. Richmond Town closes at the end of the day like any museum, and the reports come from the streets outside it.
