Rose Hill Cemetery
Idaho · USA · Cemetery
Knock on the large above ground tomb and the occupant is said to knock back. Elsewhere there is a monument reading Wolf with a bite taken out of it.
Two stories attach to Rose Hill Cemetery in Idaho Falls.
The first concerns a large square above ground tomb. Knock on it, according to the tradition, and whoever is inside knocks back.
The second concerns a monument bearing the name Wolf, with what looks like a large bite taken out of the stone. It is held locally to be the grave of a werewolf.
A visitor who investigated the site reported back in May 2005, and their findings are the useful part of this entry rather than either legend.
Both stories are the kind that grow around a distinctive object. Wolf is an ordinary surname. Damage to a headstone has ordinary causes, most of them involving weather, frost or vandalism. And a sealed stone chamber will return a knock to anyone who strikes it, which is what knocking on stone does.
