The Nacoochee Mound
Georgia · USA · Haunted site
A burial mound in the Georgia valley, thousands of years old. The romance attached to it was written by settlers, not by the people buried in it.
The mound stands in the valley in White County, Georgia and is genuinely ancient, raised by the peoples who lived here long before any European saw the place. It is a grave.
The legend attached is the one on every roadside marker in the region. Sautee, a young man from one nation, loved Nacoochee, a princess of another. They fled together and hid on the slope of Yonah Mountain. A search party found them, and her father had Sautee thrown from the cliff.
That story is a settler invention of the nineteenth century, of a type produced across the American south to give a romantic origin to places that already had real ones. Cherokee society had no princesses. The names attached to the valley came afterwards.
The mound is on private land and visible from the road. It is a burial site and the people in it are not the ones in the story.
