Shoreborne Wilson–Samuel Appleton House

Massachusetts · USA · House

Sarah Appleton has never moved out, say the people who live here — rocking chairs start up, lamps switch on, someone moves about upstairs.

The house on South Main Street was built in 1685 by Shoreborne Wilson and later passed to the Appleton family. The figure attached to it is Sarah Appleton. Residents across the years have reported the same things: rocking chairs starting to move in empty rooms, lamps coming on by themselves, and a firm sense that someone is walking about on the floor above. One family living there is said to have tried to make contact and believed they got an answer. Ipswich has an unusual number of recorded house ghosts — whole streets of seventeenth-century houses here were never pulled down — but Sarah is the one who recurs in the most accounts. The house is private; the plaque by the door gives the building date, not the ghost.
