The Daniels House

Massachusetts · USA · Inn

A grey cat brushes past your legs and dissolves into the air — and on the stairs stands a man in Puritan dress guests take for Stephen Daniels himself.

The house on Daniels Street was built in 1667 by the shipwright Stephen Daniels, before the witch trials, and has since served as a boarding house, a nursery and a tea room. It is an inn today, and guests keep reporting the same three figures. First the grey cat: it brushes against your legs in the corridor, jumps onto the bed — and is gone the moment you switch on the light. Then the man in Puritan clothing seen standing on the steep staircase, widely assumed to be Daniels himself keeping watch over his house. And finally a woman whose name nobody knows, who appears mostly in the lower rooms. None of them is felt to be threatening; the hosts speak of them as part of the building.
