The abandoned upland village was home to Tammy Younger, called queen of the witches — ox carts were said to stall of their own accord at her window.

Dogtown was a poor settlement on the barren upland of Cape Ann, abandoned in the early 1800s; what remains are cellar holes, stone walls and woods. Its most talked-about resident was Thomazine 'Tammy' Younger, who lived by Fox Hill near Alewife Brook and was called the queen of the witches. She told fortunes, brewed rum, kept company with lawless men — and legend holds that ox carts passing her window stalled of their own accord until she had been given her share of the load. Her kinswoman Judy Rhines, who picked berries, tended geese and read futures, became the village's other 'witch'. Percy MacKaye wrote a whole poem cycle about them in 1922. Today the trails run straight through their neighbourhood, past numbered cellar holes.
