Stones struck the walls night after night in 1679 and pots slid across the room on their own — and Elizabeth Morse was made to pay for it.

On the south-east side of Market Square, in the middle of today's Newburyport, stood the farmstead of the cobbler William Morse. In late 1679 what the age called the stone-throwing devil began: sticks and stones struck the walls night after night, anyone who stepped outside to look was pelted too, and indoors tables, pots and trays moved by themselves while pens, hats and inkwells disappeared. William Morse wrote it all down. A neighbour, Caleb Powell, was accused first and acquitted — after which suspicion turned on Morse's wife Elizabeth. She was condemned to death in 1680, spent a year in harsh imprisonment and was finally reprieved. A small plaque at 22 Market Street, placed in 1999, is all that marks the spot.
