Moll Pitcher told fortunes at the foot of High Rock — and if she said a voyage would end badly, whole crews refused to sign on.

High Rock rises in the middle of Lynn, and in the 1700s Moll Pitcher's cottage stood at its foot. She was born Mary Diamond in Marblehead in 1738, granddaughter of Captain Aholiab Diamond, known as the Wizard of Marblehead and said to be able to save sailors from storms and name thieves. Moll read grounds and cards herself, and her fame ran through all of New England: shipowners, captains and cabin boys climbed the hill to her before putting to sea. If she said a voyage would end badly, whole crews were known to refuse to sign on. She died in 1813, aged 74. A stone tower of 1905 now stands on the rock, and the view over the harbour is the one she read.
