Colonel Nathaniel Wade was the Ipswich man George Washington put in charge of West Point after Benedict Arnold's treason. His house on County Road still stands, and the legend attached to it is oddly precise. Residents have woken in the night to see a man in colonial dress standing right beside the bed holding a wreath — silent, doing nothing — and by the time they sat up he was not there. The wreath appears in every version of the story, and it is what makes the account hard to dismiss as an ordinary trick of shadow. The house is a private home. County Road is the old approach from the south, and the houses along it are among the town's oldest.
