In the Cleveland Metroparks stands the stone gatehouse of a castle that was never built. Feargus Squire, an executive of Standard Oil, put it up in the 1890s intending the main house to follow.

The legend is that he brought his wife out to stay the night so she could see how she would find country living, that she woke to the sound of wild animals, wandered the house terrified in the dark, and fell down the basement stairs.

It is not true. Rebecca Squire did not die here. She died years later in Cleveland, of natural causes, and the couple simply never completed the house.

That has been established repeatedly and it has changed nothing. The gatehouse is one of the most visited legend sites in Ohio, and a red light is reported moving through the empty window openings.

The building is a roofless shell in a public park and is open in daylight.
