St Mark's, Cheyenne

The man killed building the bell tower never existed. The rector kept the story going for years, and put a dummy in the tower at Halloween.

The story at this church in Cheyenne, Wyoming is that a workman was killed during the construction of the bell tower and is still in it.

A correction filed in February 2007 takes it apart, and it is one of the most useful documents in this whole archive.

There is no report of anyone dying during the building work. The story was kept going for fun, particularly at Halloween, when a previous rector ran a haunted house in the church complete with a construction worker propped up in the corner of the tower.

So the ghost had a costume and a maker, and the man who made him was the parish priest.

This is worth keeping precisely because it is the honest ending. Somewhere behind a good many entries in this collection there is a rector, a caretaker or a barman who started it on purpose, and almost none of them are ever identified.

The church is an active parish. The tower is genuinely handsome.
