Moundsville
West Virginia · USA · Prison
It was among the most violent prisons in the country, condemned and closed in 1995. It now sells itself as the most haunted site on the east coast.
The West Virginia Penitentiary at Moundsville was one of the most violent prisons in the United States. It was condemned and closed in 1995.
It now trades on being the most paranormal site on the east coast, which is a claim rather than a finding, and the building has become a commercial attraction.
What is reported is lights, laughter and a good deal else.
The real history behind it is documented and grim. Overcrowding was extreme, with men doubled and tripled into cells built for one. There were riots, including a serious one in 1986. Around a hundred men were executed here, by hanging and later in the electric chair, and many more were killed by other prisoners.
The prison also stands directly opposite the Grave Creek Mound, an Adena burial mound two thousand years old.
The site is open for tours.
