The house was built in 1900 for Alfred McCune, who made a fortune in railway contracting and mining, and no expense was spared on it: mahogany from South America, marble from Italy, and craftsmen brought in from Europe. It cost a sum that was scandalous at the time.

It has served as a music school and is now used for events.
