The Old Jail Inn
Minnesota · USA · Hotel
Two buildings at Taylors Falls: the oldest jail in Minnesota, built from stacked timber, and a main inn whose ground floor was a funeral home in the early.
The Old Jail Inn at Taylors Falls, Minnesota is two separate buildings, and both have histories worth setting out.
The southern building is the oldest jail in Minnesota. It was not framed with studs as modern buildings are, but built from true two by four boards stacked flat, one on top of another, which is how you built something nobody was going to get out of. The original wrought iron barred doors and windows are still in place on the outside. In the early 1900s it was converted into guest quarters.
The northern building is the main inn, with three floors. The ground floor, addressed as the Tunnel, was a funeral home when it first opened in the early 1800s.
A small boy has been reported on the second and third floors on various occasions, and a woman on the third floor. Guests are usually told which building they are sleeping in before they are told any of this, and the jail is the one people ask for.
