The Skyline Lodge

A three storey log lodge at ten thousand feet in the San Juans, built in 1945 in a gold and silver camp founded in the 1880s. One of the presences is.

The Skyline Lodge stands in the tiny mining town of Platoro, Colorado, at ten thousand feet in a valley of the San Juan range. It was built in 1945, three storeys of log and timber holding a general store, a restaurant, a game room and rooms for guests and staff.

Platoro was founded in the early 1880s to house and feed the men working the local gold and silver, and to give them a post office. Very little of that world survives anywhere in Colorado, and a good deal of it survives here.

The presence identified most often at the lodge is a girl called Little Eva, who was sixteen.

At this altitude, in a valley this remote, the lodge is effectively the town. Staff live in the building they work in and guests are snowed out for much of the year, which means the accounts come from people spending long uninterrupted stretches inside the same walls. That is a very different kind of witness from someone passing through on a ghost tour.
