Black Hope
Texas · USA · Cemetery
The subdivision was built over a burial ground for people who had been enslaved. A couple digging a swimming pool found out what was underneath.
This neighbourhood at Crosby, Texas was built over a cemetery, and the people buried in it were former slaves and their descendants, laid to rest by families who had almost nothing.
The residents did not know. Houses went up, lawns went in, and things began happening that nobody could account for.
It was only when a couple began digging a swimming pool in their garden that anyone found out what was down there.
What followed became one of the best documented cases in American residential history, went to court, and produced a book that carried the name of the burial ground.
The legal outcome mattered less than the fact underneath it: a developer put a subdivision over Black graves because those graves had no headstones anyone had bothered to record, and that happened across the south more times than has ever been counted.
These are private homes and the residents have had enough visitors.
