The old Mountain Bell building, Mill Avenue

Arizona · USA · Mill

A young woman who worked for the telephone company took her own life on the second floor early in the 1900s. That floor stood empty for years afterwards.

The building on Mill Avenue in Tempe, Arizona was built for the Mountain Bell telephone company. Early in the 1900s a young woman who worked there died by suicide on the second floor, near the bathroom.

The ground floor was later taken by a retail chain. The second floor stood empty for years.

It is that empty floor the reports come from. Footsteps were heard overhead while it was gutted and unoccupied, which is the part staff downstairs found difficult to explain away, since there was nothing up there to make a noise and nobody with a reason to be in it.

She has been described in the stairwell and standing in front of it.

The telephone exchanges of that period employed young women almost exclusively, in large rooms, on long shifts, under close supervision. She is not an anonymous figure in a corridor. She is one of the operators who worked in that building, and the floor she worked on was left empty above a shop for decades.
