USS Alabama
Alabama · USA · Haunted site
The Mighty A came through the Pacific war without a single casualty from enemy fire. The eight men who died aboard her were killed by one of her own.
The USS Alabama has been moored in Mobile Bay since 1964 as a tourist attraction and a memorial to Alabama's veterans. She is a South Dakota class battleship, completed in 1942, and she saw heavy action against the Japanese in the south Pacific, credited with shooting down twenty three aircraft.
Her record is remarkable. The Alabama and her crew came through the whole war without a single casualty or any damage from enemy fire.
The deaths that did occur aboard her were caused by the ship herself. Eight men in a five inch gun mount, number five, were killed by friendly fire from another turret, mount nine, firing across them. A safety interlock existed precisely to prevent a turret firing when it was trained on another part of the ship. That is where the reports on board are concentrated, and it is why visitors are usually told the story at the mount rather than on the bridge. A ship that survived a war intact lost her men to her own guns, and the crew never forgot which compartment it happened in.
