Vegors Cemetery

Iowa · USA · Cemetery

A burial ground over 150 years old in three miles of Iowa woodland, standing on far older graves. Five mounds run along the hilltop.

Vegors Cemetery sits in the middle of three miles of woods near Stratford, Iowa, and it is more than a hundred and fifty years old. Long before that it was a burial ground of the people who lived here, and five mounds still run along the hilltop.

When settlers arrived they dug into those graves and moved the remains into the mounds.

The account handed down says that in retaliation a woman named Mrs Henry Lott was killed, the first white woman killed in Webster County, and that she was buried here.

The Lott killings are documented, and the fuller history is worse than the summary. Henry Lott's family were attacked in 1846 after a dispute with Sidominadotah, a Sioux leader. Lott's later revenge, the murder of Sidominadotah and his entire family in 1854, is one of the direct causes of the Spirit Lake massacre three years afterwards.

None of that is a ghost story, and all of it happened on this ground.
