Arizona · USA · Execution site
Henry Wickenburg found gold here and the town below carries his name. The caretakers will tell you about the noises in their house, and about the mess.
The Vulture Mine near Wickenburg, Arizona was founded by Henry Wickenburg after he found gold on this ground in 1863, and it became the richest gold mine in the territory.
Two places on the site produce accounts.
The caretaker's house is one. The man and his wife who lived there heard things they could not account for, and will talk about it openly with anyone who asks.
The other is the mess hall, where the smell of food has been reported although nothing has been cooked there for a very long time.
Wickenburg himself made almost nothing from his discovery. He sold his interest, was never fully paid, and died in poverty.
The mine was worked with cyanide and mercury, and ore was stolen constantly by the men who dug it. The buildings still stand in the desert around the headframe.
The site is privately owned and open to visitors at set times.
