The lighthouse at Newport, Oregon is associated with a young woman named Muriel Trevenard, who was visiting with friends. They looked round and left. She realised she had left her handkerchief in the kitchen, told a friend called Harold she would be back directly, and went in through the kitchen door.

One thing has to be said, and it does not spoil the story. Muriel Trevenard never existed. She is a character in a piece of fiction, published in 1899 in an Oregon magazine, written as a story and taken up afterwards as fact.

That is remarkable in itself. A magazine tale from over a century ago has become the resident legend of a real building, told by visitors who have never heard of the author.

The lighthouse itself is genuine, built in 1871, used for three years, and it is the only wooden lighthouse left standing in Oregon.

It is open to visitors.
