Among the stone walls of the ancient royal city, the ancestors' spirits are said to keep watch – and voices are once said to have spoken from the rocks.

Between the 12th and 15th centuries, Great Zimbabwe was the capital of a powerful kingdom, its walls of dressed granite raised entirely without mortar. To the Shona people the ruined city is sacred ground: the spirits of the kings, the mhondoro, are said to linger among the walls, and an old tradition tells that voices were once heard speaking from the rocks on the hill. The carved soapstone birds found here are believed to bind together the worlds of the living and the spirits. Taboos still apply at the site today – certain stones must never be moved, and parts of the hill are not to be entered.
