Shadows of the Gothic Quarter
the Raval vampire, the Inquisition and the mass grave at Santa Maria del Mar
Barcelona loves to show off its sunny boulevards, but the old city carries a darkness documented in court records, parish books and bombing reports. This walk begins in El Raval, where in 1912 the press turned a poor woman into the city vampire, and passes the medieval hospital where Gaudí died among the poor. We cross La Rambla at the opera house that has burned twice and been bombed once, enter the Gothic Quarter to the square where 42 people died in an air raid in 1938, walk through the Jewish quarter wiped out in the pogrom of 1391, pass the skull beneath the bishop bridge and the cathedral crypt of the martyr, and reach the square where the Inquisition held its trials. The walk ends at the mass grave of 1714 and the citadel built on a demolished neighbourhood. Ten stops, seven centuries, and almost nothing is invented. What is folklore, we tell as folklore. The rest is Barcelona's own history.
