Al Madam Buried Village

Sharjah · Förenade Arabemiraten · Abandoned site

In this sand-drowned desert village the jinn Umm Duwais is said to roam – a beauty with feline eyes who lures treasure hunters to their doom.

The small village outside Al Madam was built in the 1970s for Bedouin of the Al Ketbi tribe, but was abandoned by the mid-1990s and is now slowly being swallowed by the dunes. According to local legend it was not the sandstorms that drove the residents away but Umm Duwais – a female jinn with cat-like eyes, an intoxicating perfume and blades for hands. She is said to prowl the half-buried houses, luring men who come searching for the valuables the fleeing villagers supposedly left behind. Visitors tell of footsteps in the sand and scents that have no place in the desert.
