Rather than be taken captive, Princess Argjiro leapt from the fortress's highest tower with her son – and milk is said to have flowed from the rock.

According to legend, Princess Argjiro ruled the city in the 14th century and personally led the defence when Ottoman forces besieged the massive fortress. The castle fell through betrayal, and rather than fall into enemy hands alive, Argjiro threw herself from the highest tower with her infant in her arms. She was dashed against the rock – but the boy survived, and milk is said to have begun flowing from the stone to nourish him. The city is said to bear her name, and the rock where she fell is still pointed out. In later times the fortress served as a notorious prison, whose dark cells have only deepened the site's grim reputation.
