Old York Hospital

Western Australia · Australia · Hospital

At the abandoned hospital in the goldfields town of York, nurses refused to go upstairs alone as early as the 1920s — where the matron's ghost is said to keep watch still.

The Old York Hospital was built in 1896 in the historic town of York east of Perth and is reckoned Western Australia's most haunted building. A matron who worked there in the 1920s already told of something terrifying in the upstairs rooms, and of nurses always making their rounds in pairs. Over the years visitors have reported being grabbed, shoved and even pricked by unseen needles, while babies' cries and women's moans have been heard from the old maternity ward at night. The hospital later served as a hostel before passing into private hands, and its haunted reputation is now firmly rooted in the state's folklore.
